Weekend celebrating Maldon's history unveiled
A Maldon art museum will be celebrating the history of the district this weekend.
Visitors will be able to enjoy free events at the Maeldune Heritage Centre, at the top of Market Hill, to mark this year's Heritage Weekend.
The Maldon Society has organised 15 new oral history recordings to be played for visitors for the open days, in which residents speak of their memories of the district.
Dorren Linton, from the Maldon Society, said the recordings include residents recalling "milk being delivered by horse and cart, a son's memories of working in his parents' shop, Collins the grocers, going pea-picking and many more memories".
The recordings are linked to the Edible England theme of this year's Heritage Weekend, which is England's largest heritage festival.
There will be a folder detailing the history behind the motifs in the 42-foot long Maldon Embroidery, which relate to the Edible England theme.
The embroidery consists of seven panels commemorating the 1000th anniversary of the Battle of Maldon in 991 AD.
Archived videos of Maldon Salt production will also be displayed on the society's widescreen at the centre.
There will be pen and ink drawings by Charles Tait and Gordon Harris of the High Street from the 1950s to 2000.
Visitors will be able to browse photographs of the Markham family's mineral, water bottle and jug collection - the family business dates back to the 1880s and lasted for about 70 years, through three generations of Markhams.
An Anglo Saxon and Viking reenactment display will take place from 10am to 3pm on both days and include training, games and a battle.
The centre will be open to visitors from 10am to 4pm on Saturday 11 and Sunday 12 September.
Dorreen said: "Please come along to listen and look at these collections."
You can visit the centre's website for details of activities throughout both days using the link here.
