Year 11 History students at Plume Academy to receive award from Migration Museum
Two teams of GCSE History students, who have been researching migration into the Maldon District, have won recognition from the Migration Museum.
Plume Academy, in collaboration with The Maldon Society, has arranged a special Maldon Society meeting to hear the interesting findings from the seven pupils involved on Tuesday 26 April.
As part of their Year 11 History coursework, students were asked to pick a local individual to study, and to investigate the historical context of that person's migration to the Maldon District.
Plume Academy's Executive Principal, Carl Wakefield, described it as a 'tremendous initiative'.
The Maldon Society has been hoping to build up a joint interest with the Plume Academy on the subject of local history.
It said: "We are really thrilled to announce that our long-standing efforts for closer collaboration with young people at the Plume Academy have borne some fruit!"
History teacher Matt Springett will introduce the students' work with an illustrated overview of Maldon migration. The evening will allow the two teams to present their work, before receiving prizes from representatives from the Migration Museum.
The museum was founded by former Labour MP Barbara Roche, who first made the case for a migration museum almost 20 years ago, stemming from her time as Britain's immigration minister.
The Maldon Society has archives of oral history recordings from residents, along with digital archives, which can be accessed at the Maeldune Heritage Centre as well as on the website.
Our Migration Story will be held at the Upper Plume School, Main Hall, Fambridge Road. Entrance will be via Reception Office at 5.30pm, with the event starting at 6pm.
The event is expected to last 90 minutes, and local U3A history groups have also been invited to attend.
Anyone wishing to attend should email: [email protected] by Wednesday 20 April.
