A Met Office warning for sleet, ice and snow has been issued

A new weather warning for sleet, snow and ice across the Maldon district has been issued.

The yellow warning - which indicates a small chance of disruption to travel and power supplies, runs from midnight today (Friday, 8 January) to 11 m tomorrow and is likely to cause slippery surfaces on some roads.

Broomfield Hospital's new vaccination hub joins the national effort to roll out the vaccine

A group of pensioners who have been among the first to have their Covid-19 jab at Broomfield Hospital told how pleased they are - to begin the path back to a more normal life and to help protect others around them.

The Chelmsford hospital opened its vaccination hub this week for the very first time as part of the national race to roll out the vaccine to the 80-plus and frontline health and care workers.

Latest data shows that on 5 January there were 1,024 beds occupied by Covid-19 patients across all Essex hospitals - an increase of seven per cent in the past week, though figures show a decrease in the last two days, as illustrated.

This means that more than a third - 34 per cent - of total hospital bed capacity is taken up by Covid-19 patients in the county. This is seven per cent higher compared to the previous week - so on 29 December.

Where reasoned conversation has not been successful Essex Police will take enforcement action against people flouting Covid-19 rules, the force has said.

The position comes amidst warnings from the Metropolitan Police which has instructed officers to enforce lockdown laws more "quickly" and accept fewer "reasonable excuses" in an effort to save lives.
