A doctor believes a full national lockdown is now unavoidable

A doctor at Broomfield Hospital has indicated that a full national lockdown for at least the next four weeks is unavoidable – given the number of surging Covid-19 cases across Essex.

Respiratory consultant Dr Steve Jenkins predicted that January looked "very grim" in an earlier Facebook post, where he also warned that he could not be certain that the NHS would be able to provide comprehensive emergency care heading into deep winter.

Essex Police have issued more than £18,000 in fixed penalty notices overnight to hundreds of people who broke Covid-19 restrictions.

Describing those who were fined as "reckless" a police spokesperson said: "It's after hundreds of people chose to attend unlicensed events in our county to flout coronavirus restrictions, endanger themselves and others, and put extra strain on our NHS on New Year's Eve."

Maldon: the January return of primary and secondary school pupils is delayed

Essex County Council (ECC) has put together more information on the situation for the return of schools in Maldon district.

As previously reported, Maldon is among the districts where the Government decided on Wednesday, 30 December, to delay the return to school of both primary and secondary school age children. College students will also have a delayed return.
