MALDON Town Council is to thrash out a new policy on use of its allotments - after a problem with some holders using the growing space to park their cars.

At a meeting of the council's environment committee yesterday (Monday, 28 September) evening, members heard that the issue meant some plots would not be suitable for growing fruit and vegetables afterwards due to potential pollution of the soil from any fuel and other liquids that could leak from the vehicles, as well as compaction.

Here's a reminder that Maldon residents have a chance later today to take part in the Annual General Meeting (AGM) of those who commission most local health services, from GPs to hospital care.

The Mid Essex Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) – which commissions NHS services in Maldon district, including GPs, hospital care and mental health and learning disability services for the area – is throwing the virtual meeting open to the public at 6pm this evening.

The existing nuclear power station at Bradwell-on-Sea

THE company behind the proposed new nuclear power station at Bradwell has said its focus is on "progressing" the application, despite claims by campaigners that the project could be abandoned in the coming weeks or months.

Local anti-nuclear campaigners, Blackwater Against New Nuclear Group (BANNG), is suggesting that the cards are stacking up against Bradwell B following the announcement last week that the proposed Wylfa nuclear plant on Anglesey in Wales will not now go ahead. Plans for the Wylfa plant were pulled by Japanese company Hitachi. BANNG argues that the Wylfa project, which was supported by the local Welsh community, could only have been saved by UK government financial support to underwrite energy prices – which has not happened.

A MALDON landlord defended what happened at his pub in lockdown as councillors reviewed his premises licence this afternoon (Monday, 28 September).

The application to review the license of The Jolly Sailor pub in Church Street was made by Maldon District Council's (MDC's) Environmental Health Department and was heard by MDC's Licensing Sub Committee. The licensees are Alan and Kerry Brett, with Mr Brett the designated premises supervisor.

MALDON's adult residents are being invited to join people from across the county on a new panel to share their views and opinions on a variety of local issues.

The residents' panel, which will be run by Essex County Council (ECC), will ask those who join about a wide range of issues, which could include surveys on education, travel, the environment, mental and physical health, local services and amenities and more.

CONFIRMED cases of Covid-19 have more than doubled in the past seven days in Maldon district – though figures remain the second lowest in the county.

According to figures updated yesterday (Sunday, 27 September) there were six confirmed cases of coronavirus in the district area. In the previous weeks, this had varied from two to three cases in any seven day period.

THE Maldon news week started off quietly enough and perhaps with the sort of feeling we have become used to since March – waiting to see, waiting to find out what will happen next.

Waiting – some to find out whether they could carry on seeing loved ones, others to know whether a wedding could go ahead even with reduced plans, others still whether their hard-built businesses or careers might yet survive and some whether or not they needed to worry about other medical treatment going ahead.
