MALDON District Council could make substantial changes to the way planning committees operate if councillors agree to a set of new proposals.

On the table for discussion and decision at a full council meeting next Thursday (2 September) is a set of proposals which would see the current three area planning committees (Central, North Western and South Eastern) removed and the formation of a new single committee covering the whole district.

IN a relatively quiet spot in Maldon behind the town centre shops, something is happening that transforms the lives of local people and helps them to achieve things they may not have previously realised they were capable of.

The clue is in the name of a course available at ACL Maldon, based in the upper level of the building in White Horse Lane that houses the town's library – Access to HE (Higher Education).

For obvious reasons, the great battleships of the Royal Navy were not built by Maldon shipbuilders. The size of these ships required major seaports like Portsmouth or deep estuaries like the Medway. This hasn't stopped Maldon from contributing to the vital smaller ships that the Royal Navy has needed.

As recently as World War 2, John Sadd and Sons built motor launches, torpedo boats, gunboats and landing craft for the Royal Navy. The town was listed as being responsible for supplying the King with one ship as far back as the Domesday Book. Henry II was entitled to one ship for forty days in return for Maldon's Royal Charter in 1171.

Liam Taylor, who was murdered at the age of 19

A grandmother well-known in the Maldon community for her support of others is hoping people will support a free family event being held tomorrow (Sunday, 22 August) to commemorate the life of her murdered teenage grandson.

Julie Taylor, known for her work at The Cafe at St Peter's Hospital, is holding the fun day at Great Baddow in collaboration with the Great Baddow East Neighbourhood Association (GBENA).

THE new virtual high street service that aims to support independent shops has more than 200 stores signed up in Essex and almost 7,000 products available - including a growing number in Maldon district.

Allison Gray, Chair of Maldon Business Board and owner of boutique Willow & Fox in the High Street, told Nub News: "We'd love even more Maldon businesses to sign up to the scheme. We've seen such great success in other towns and it would be amazing to see Maldon sharing in this success."
