PC Ewan Smith with his young family

SIX serving police officers have completed a 71.449 kilometre walking challenge and raised more than £9,000 in memory of their friend, colleague and policeman PC Ewan Smith, who previously worked at Chelmsford.

PC Ewan Smith died at the age of 36. In March 2020 he had been unable to attend work due to a headache. Later that day he suffered a sudden seizure and was rushed to hospital. Tragically, Ewan was found to have a brain tumour, he never recovered consciousness following the seizure and died three days later.

A grandmother known by many in the Maldon community for her heroic support of others has described how she is haunted by the loss of her young grandson after two men were convicted of his murder.

Julie Taylor, known for her work at The Cafe at St Peter's Hospital, was in court today (Wednesday, 5 May), to hear the verdicts in the case concerning the murder of her grandson Liam Taylor, aged just 19.

Planned building of up to 1,200 new homes has led to proposed changes to the Burnham Road

A CAMPAIGN group has started up a crowdfunding page to commission specialist consultants to produce a report on the likely impact of proposed development on the Burnham Road.

A spokesperson for The Woodham Infrastructure Group said: "We have started a crowdfunding venture primarily with the aim of raising money for a detailed highways report from a specialist highways/transport/planning consultancy as we have been told that this is the next step to take."

MALDON District Council (MDC) has received a planning application for the site currently occupied by Quest Motors.

The motor dealership, which had a premises in Maldon for close to 100 years - previously in the High Street and from 2007 at Wycke Hill Business Park - recently announced that it would be leaving Wycke Hill at the end of May to continue business online and at the firm's Braintree site.
