Accusations that Essex County Council's Conservative administration have dropped "sound finance" from their 2021/22 budget have been rejected, with the claim said to be "nothing further from the truth".

The Liberal Democrats claim "difficult decisions that are inevitable" are being "put off" and the budget depends on unnamed cuts, which its finance officer says runs a risk of not being delivered.

There are now just a few caravans remaining at the car park site

Some of a group of travellers who stayed overnight at a Maldon leisure centre car park appear to have left the site this morning (Monday, 22 February).

Maldon District Council (MDC) is working with the county council and Essex Police to resolve the situation after the travellers arrived and parked their caravans at the Blackwater Leisure Centre in Park Drive yesterday.

The surge testing is due to the discovery of a single case of the South African variant in Brentwood

A single case of the South African variant of Covid-19 means surge testing will now be carried out in the Brentwood area, Essex County Council has announced.

In a statement issued today (Sunday, 21 February) a spokesperson said: "We are beginning surge testing (additional community testing for people who do not have any Covid-19 symptoms) in the CM13 area of Brentwood.

AN appeal for witnesses has been made by police after two teenage girls at the main gates of Maldon's Promenade Park car park were inappropriately approached by a man who grabbed them.

The incident happened on Sunday (31 January) at around 2.30pm when the man tried to engage the girls in conversation. As the girls attempted to leave, the unknown male grabbed them by the arms. The girls pulled away and the man shortly left the area in the direction of the High Street.

West Maldon Community Centre in Sunbury Way

Essex County Council has warned that while the infection rate across the county - including in Maldon - is dropping, it is still vital that the community continues to follow pandemic guidance to take cases down further.

There is also a reminder that, wherever possible, residents who cannot work from home are advised to take regular lateral flow tests - now available at West Maldon Community Centre in Sunbury Way - without booking.
