MALDON is to take part in the Totally Locally Fiver Fest this month – giving shoppers the chance to grab a bargain and support the town's independent shops at the same time.

Starting on Saturday (10 October) and ending on Saturday, 24 October, Fiver Fest involves local businesses running special offers for just £5.

The lodge house and gates as they now stand

THERE'S a building facing the busy Colchester Road in Heybridge that stands out as rather different from the others. A closer look reveals a circular blue plaque. Straight away, it can be seen that this place ranks somewhere in the town's history – and in this case, it marks the place where one of Maldon's most influential characters once built his extraordinary home.

Any newcomer to Maldon will quickly hear the name Bentall – or Bentall's – mentioned somewhere or somehow. The famous Bentall's factory is indeed very much a part of living memory, having closed its gates in the 1980s after a history dating back 150 years in the town.

Social distancing:  Essex public health chief Dr Mike Gogarty is emphasising its continued importance

THE number of confirmed Covid-19 cases in Maldon district has dropped back down below the county average.

There have been seven confirmed cases in the district over the seven days up to yesterday (Friday, 2 October), equal to 10.8 per 100,000 population. That compares to 16.8 per 100,000 average for the Essex County Council area overall. The county has seen a total of 250 new cases in the last seven days.

STANDING proud in a glass case, one of the first exhibits visitors to Maldon's Combined Military Services Museum will see is something of an emblem for the town.

The Viking sword, unearthed at a site somewhere in Heybridge, dates to the era of the Battle of Maldon in 991. Whether it was definitely used in the battle and who by - Viking or Saxon - are matters there can be no absolute certainty on, but it is the most likely real-life relic of the famous fight we have.

A DAMNING report on the ambulance service covering Maldon reveals "poor leadership" that has led to failures to protect staff and patients from potential sexual abuse and fostered an internal culture of bullying and harassment.

The trust has been found to have failed to meet 12 aspects of its legal obligations in the shocking Care and Quality Commission (CQC) report published yesterday (Wednesday, 30 September).
