WORK has resumed on a project to merge the varied transport services that ensure patients in Maldon, Burnham and the Dengie Peninsula can get to appointments.

It's the latest step in amalgamation and unification of many health connected services across the region, where several hospitals - including the former Basildon & Thurrock Hospitals Trust - have already come under one united trust, a move that wasn't achieved without significant opposition from local communities.

Thomas Abel's initials in the Tower of London

At various times in Henry VIII's reign you could be martyred for being too Catholic or too Protestant. Thomas More personally supervised the trial and burning of a number of Protestants, only to end up being beheaded for refusing to acknowledge Henry VIII's authority over the church – and is celebrated as a Catholic saint for this act.

Thomas Abel (or Abell) was executed for the same reason on 30th July 1530 – but unlike More, who received the "mercy" of the headsman's axe, Abel suffered the gruesome death of a traitor: hanging, drawing and quartering.

MALDON'S ambulance station has received a front garden makeover as thanks for the way staff served the community during the pandemic.

Carol McCafferty and her husband Shaun, who is Chairman of Maldon and Heybridge Horticultural Society, decided to galvanise fellow gardening enthusiasts into action to transform the previously drab spot with new trees and shrubs, perennial and annual plants, as well as an obelisk decorated with a hand-painted wooden bird and a bug hotel.
