Maldon has many fine views, but the view along White Horse Lane from the car park to the public library is not one of them. Yet this area was once part of the heart of Medieval Maldon.

A wrought iron sign and information panels in the rather bleak alley that runs alongside the old Woolworths (now M&Co) to the car park commemorates a piece of history lost in the turbulent years of Henry VIII's closure of the monasteries.

ESSEX County Council has stepped in to announce today (Friday, 23 October) that it is providing emergency grants for foodbanks to help make sure they have enough supplies over this coming half term.

The authority is launching the 'Half Term Emergency Fund' for foodbanks and other organisations which provide food to communities. Foodbanks will be able to apply for a grant of up to £2,500 to help make sure they have enough supplies to cover the half term.

As a local journalist, having interesting news to report is always something you want – but I would rather report good news than bad every time. It simply isn't true that negative stories always get far more response than positive ones. Yes, the biggest crime and other stories draw readers – but so to do the truly 'happy' stories where the community comes together or something incredible is achieved.
