The Call to Arms event at Stow Maries Great War Aerodrome
Stow Maries Great War Aerodrome, Hackmans Lane, Purleigh CM3 6RN
Family
5th Aug 2023 - 6th Aug 2023
UNTIL Sunday 6th August
Stow Maries Great War Aerodrome, Europe's largest surviving First World War aerodrome, will be stepping back in time on August 5 and 6.
The popular local museum will welcome leading Living History groups from across the country, led by long term partners The Nimy Company, to give visitors a rare glimpse into the past. Men and women will be recreating the fateful weekend in 1914 when the armed forces of Great Britain were mobilised to defend Belgium and France.
Visitors, as part of their regular admission fee, will be able to mingle amongst the soldiers and their camps and enjoy all sorts of displays of musketry, drill and more.
Chief Executive Officer Ian Flint says the groups rarely get such an opportunity.
"Speaking as a huge fan of Living History, I know how rare it is for these groups to be able to get together on such an iconic site," he said.
"Dedicated WW1 sites are rare – and because Stow is so untouched, it is a hugely popular place for the Historians. For the visitor, it's a chance to see, hear and perhaps feel the atmosphere of a Great War military camp, coming to life around them."
