A group of family and friends has raised over £5000 for a Maldon-based charity which supports young carers in the district.

The group completed the challenging 25-mile walk over the Yorkshire Peaks on Saturday 10 July for Action for Family Carers (AFFC), which is based in Brickhouse Farm on Poulton Close.

AFFC is close to the group's hearts because organiser Yasmin Nash's mum, Alison Monro, is living with stage four breast cancer. Her 11-year-old daughter, Tilly, helps to care for her.

Yasmin said: "We just want the money to go to anyone who's struggling. We struggle and it's so emotional but when you've got support you come together - we come together really tight and really strong."

She added: "We live in Essex so Maldon is very close to us, and we found a charity that we really like - so we wanted to do something nice."

AFFC provides one-to-one support, group support and respite for young carers in Essex. The group raised the funds to give back to a charity that helps so many families - so that it can keep providing and expanding its services.

Yasmin said: "My little sister and little cousins all did one of the peaks, so they've given it a really good go. One of our friends, who is 69, did all three.

"Everyone was really good - there were lots of cheers."

Yasmin, who lives in France, had to complete her walk over the Col de la Loze in the French Alps due to Covid-19 regulations. She said: "Me, my husband James and my son couldn't get to the UK, so we just did a big one in France."

She added: "We have a really good group of friends here, so it was a really special day, and then we had a barbeque.

"It was a really emotional day. I was emotional here, they were emotional there. We're just so much of a family."

Alison, who has fundraised for other charities, also organised the walk. Yasmin said: "She's just incredible really - she's an inspiration. She's done so well and she does so much every day."
