The MP for Maldon has planted a wooden cross in tribute to the sacrifices made by Maldon driver Ben Cobey and other residents of the district in parliament's new Garden of Remembrance.
John Whittingdale placed the tribute in the temporary garden, which has been created at the main entrance to parliament to mark 100 years of Remembrance as we know it.
Mr Whittingdale said: "I am very pleased to pay this tribute to Ben Cobey whose bravery is at last now being recognised, as well as all those from the Maldon constituency who have given their lives in the two world wars and since."
Driver Cobey, who was born on 10 March 1895 at 39 Church street, was a member of the gun crew killed at Mons on 26 August 1914.
While his three colleagues each received the Victoria Cross, Driver Cobey was not recognised - possibly because he was born out of wedlock.
It was only in 2014 that his name was added to the war memorial in St Mary the Virgin Church in Maldon, thanks to the tireless campaigning of local historian Councillor Stephen Nunn.
His actions were also commemorated with the naming of Ben Cobey Avenue in Maldon in 2018.
Each MP has been invited by Sir Lindsay Hoyle, the speaker, to place a tribute in parliament's Garden of Remembrance - which will remain in place until Remembrance Sunday (14 November).
Mr Whittingdale said: "I am grateful to the speaker for creating the garden and look forward to participating in the ceremonies this Remembrance Sunday both in Maldon and at Stow Maries Aerodrome."
