Maldon bin crews facing 'unacceptable' rise in harassment

Maldon bin crews are facing an "unacceptable" rise in verbal abuse and physical threats while out collecting rubbish from peoples' homes.

SUEZ, the waste collection firm contracted by Maldon District Council (MDC), says harassment was a regular occurrence before the pandemic but has worsened in recent months.

MDC issued a statement last week reminding residents that serious instances will be reported to the police.

Alexander Chingatiphiri, Contract Manager for SUEZ, said the firm would support action against the culprits.

He said: "Our employees perform a vital job for local residents and communities across Maldon, and any type of verbal or physical altercation is completely unacceptable.

"We will continue to work closely with the police and Maldon District Council to identify anti-social behaviour and won't hesitate to support any action against those responsible."

Responding to the increase in abuse, Councillor Wendy Stamp, leader of MDC, asked residents via a statement to treat the staff and contractors collecting their bins with respect.

She said: "We are proud to have continued to deliver services during the Covid-19 lockdowns.

"The last 18 months have been very difficult, and I recognise the challenging times that we have all faced.

"However, this does not excuse the abuse that our staff and contractors have recently experienced and we will not hesitate to deal with such incidents.

"Please be kind to our staff and contractors who are just trying to do their jobs."
