Maldon pub is collecting snack and treat donations for NHS frontline staff

A project to collect community donations for NHS frontline workers at local hospitals has a collection point at a well-known Maldon pub.

While the Queen Victoria pub in Spital Road is currently closed, the left-hand door of the pub is open to allow people to place items on a collection table.

Anyone wanting to donate goods should look for the NHS Community Logo. There is hand sanitizer on the table. You will not be able to go into the pub as it remains closed apart from food deliveries to the immediate local area.

The project is the brainchild of Teresa Andrews, who wanted to show support to the hardworking staff at Broomfield Hospital and asked for donations to take to them.

Soon, Teresa ended up with a small team of local co-ordinators supporting her and a number of dedicated collection points have been set up across the local area.

Pub landlords felt this was a great way they could help out while their premises are closed and those now with collection points include the Queen Victoria in Maldon along with The Wheatsheaf and Tulip in Chelmsford and The Crown in Sandon.

Donations have been arranged with the Charity Co-ordinator at Broomfield Hospital and the team have now starting supporting other hospitals including Braintree, and hopefully moving onto as many frontline workers as they can.

Suggested donations include packaged sweet and savoury snacks, including savoury snacks made using hot water (for example, Pot Noodles) and soft drinks, tea and coffee. Cards, letters and drawings to thank the staff and boost morale are also welcomed.

The drop off points are open from midday to 4pm daily, including at the Queen Victoria. The pub is also continuing to donate a lot of stock that would also otherwise be wasted.

Anyone who would like to keep up to date on where the donations are going can visit the project's Facebook page through the link here.
