More volunteers are needed from Maldon to "ramp up" the booster programme across the district, one year after the UK became the first country in the world to administer a Covid-19 jab.

Longfield Medical Centre, on Princes Road, has launched a recruitment drive for new volunteers to accelerate its booster programme as the NHS cuts the qualifying time from six months after a second dose to three.

The NHS has updated its online booking system today (Wednesday, 8 December) to allow adults aged 40 and over and those in high-risk groups to book their Covid booster jab three months after their second dose.

A spokesperson for Longfield Medical Centre said: "As we prepare to ramp up the booster programme, we are in need of more volunteers to help at the vaccination centre at the Maldon District Council offices on Princes Road.

"Clinic sessions run as often as seven days a week for up to 12 hours a day.

"This huge undertaking cannot be achieved without the valued support of our volunteers.

"There are a range of volunteering roles on offer and shifts are broken up into periods of four hours.

"Whether you can offer the time for one shift or several shifts, all assistance is gratefully accepted.

"There are no sit down roles, so volunteers should be able to stand for the duration of their shift."

The hard work of staff at the centre is also being praised today, as the team has delivered a landmark 75,000 jabs to residents.

Dan Doherty, alliance director for the Mid and South Essex Health and Care Partnership, visited the centre today to thank its volunteers in person.

Samantha Young, manager of the centre, said the achievement is "truly a credit to all the staff and volunteers who have helped us on this journey" and who have "worked with us for the past year in all winds and weather, welcoming everyone through the door".

She said: "We're delighted to have helped so many people from Maldon and the surrounding areas."

She added: "This coming winter challenge needs all the help you can give the NHS, so please help us help you and get your first second or booster vaccine as soon as you become eligible."
