A man armed with an axe robbed a store in Maldon last night (Wednesday, 1 September), leaving a female member of staff injured.

Police were informed at around 9.14pm that a man wearing a balaclava and armed with an axe had entered the Co-op Foodstore in Wood Road, Heybridge.

A spokesperson for Essex Police said: "He then forced open a door which struck a woman, causing a minor cut.

"He left a short time later with a quantity of cash.

"Two people were treated at the scene by ambulance colleagues for a cut and shock."

Eyewitnesses reported seeing police dogs and a helicopter looking for the suspect.

They said that two female staff had been working alone in the store prior to the attack.

The man is described as white, aged approximately 55 years, with bags under his eyes.
