Maldon Town Council has recommended that plans for a new Thai take-away in the town are approved.

Members of the Planning Committee last night (Monday, 22 March) debated the application for change of use of the former Maldon Second Hand and Antiques Centre at 132, Mill Road.

The application describes the new shop as a 'fast-food take-away' but a report prepared for the application adds the detail that it is intended to offer Thai food.

Maldon District Council will now make the decision on whether the plans are given the full go-ahead as Maldon Town Council are consultees in the planning process for this application.

Muhammed Uddin is the applicant.

Speaking at last night's meeting, some councillors were concerned about parking issues and the proximity to Plume Academy.

However, it was noted that the take-away will not open until 4.30pm each day and that parking spaces are available at the property.

Councillor Michael Pearlman said: "I think we have to support businesses at a difficult time and it is suitable for this location, which is already busy with a fish and chop shop and the Co-op."

Councillor Flo Shaughnessy added: "My initial reaction is that it was an eyesore and so anything to tidy it up is good."
