Promenade Park will be closed to vehicles tomorrow (Friday, 18 February), as Storm Eunice is expected to cause "extremely strong winds" in Maldon.

Maldon District Council decided to close the park due to the expected weather conditions, ahead of what threatens to be the worst storm to hit the UK in 30 years.

A spokesperson for the district council said: "This is because there will be very high winds across the park throughout the day, and a serious risk of branches falling from trees and debris being blown around.

"We also encourage people to avoid visiting the park during the day, and to only travel if it is absolutely essential. "We hope to reopen the park to vehicles on Saturday, providing the weather has improved to a safe level. This will be confirmed once a full safety assessment has been made later in the week." An amber warning has been issued throughout Essex by the Met Office, from 5am to 9pm, with winds of up to 70mph expected. The Met Office warned the storm may cause "significant disruption", with "a good chance that flying debris could result in a danger to life". Damage to buildings and homes is also "likely", while it is expected there will be "falling branches and some uprooted trees". Essex County Council said recycling centres across the county may be forced to close at short notice, while rail passengers are being advised to travel only if their journey is essential. Greater Anglia is reducing its train service - you can view the changes here. The spokesperson for the district council said: "Where possible, we are advising against travelling unless it is essential, due to the increased risk of falling branches and flying debris caused by the wind. "Please be careful during this period, and please stay safe." READ MORE: - £128k bid to carry out works on Maldon Promenade Park recommended for approval - including new footpath
