Rhythm and blues band fronted by Burnham man releases first album in 21 years
An Essex-based rhythm and blues band has released a special album to mark its 40th anniversary - its first recording in 21 years.
Automatic Slim recorded the album - called Down by the Waterside - at Rooks Yard Studio just outside Southminster to mark a career which has seen members play more than 3,500 live shows across the UK and Europe.
The veteran band is fronted by Burnham resident Tim Aves, alongside Bradwell guitarist Ian Cundy, Braintree drummer Don Moore and bass player Howard J Bills, who lived in Witham until recently.
They have been playing as a band since 1982, releasing several albums and singles over the years.
"We're thrilled to bits with the way the album has turned out," Tim said.
"Although the band stopped gigging regularly in 1999, we've continued to play a few gigs each year.
"However, our last album was way back in 2001. That one's been out of print for years, so it's great to be getting our music out there again.
"There's been a lot of interest in this project. It's amazing really that people still want to hear what we're doing after all these years."
Down by the Waterside was mostly recorded before the first lockdown, and it was completed in autumn last year.
It showcases new original songs by the band, including Caroline (Under the Covers) - a tribute to the legendary former pirate station Radio Caroline, which is moored on the River Blackwater near Bradwell-on-Sea.
The 13-track album features several songs by Dr Feelgood legend Wilko Johnson and the band's take on a number of classic blues and rock'n'roll songs.
The CD also includes contributions by award-winning blues guitarist Joel Fisk - who has played in bands including Hokie Joint, LaVendore Rogue and Tim Aves & Wolfpack - piano player Carleton Van Selman, from Mojo Preachers, and up-and-coming Maldon singer Holly Hallam.
You can buy the CD at gigs and from the band's website here.
Downloads will be available shortly.
