Opinions vary over shop plan
By Nub News Reporter 29th Apr 2026
PLANS to re-open a convenience shop, in a "very rural" Essex village, could cause "repeated disorder", a worried neighbour has said.
Sivarajah Thenushan, who has run small stores for around a decade, is planning to re-launch the former Post Office in Burnham Road, Althorne. He is proposing to "restore and refit" the former store, which shut down almost a decade ago.
But a worried neighbour fears a repeat of previous arson and antisocial behaviour at the site. Maldon District Council's licensing sub-committee discussed the plans on April 22.
The resident claimed there has previously been vandalism and arson at the site which "caused distress and concern."
They added: "It was repeatedly reported to the police, however the matter went on for months, causing a crime and disorder issue and a public nuisance. Any consent to grant the license would raise concerns as to whether it could lead to repeated disorder, violent or drug related activities. Disturbance from noise is also a concern."
Jeyam's Supermarket, which was at the site, and included the former Post Office, closed in June 2018.
At the time, it caused concerns and anger from residents. There are no plans for the Post Office to return to the village.
An agent for the applicant called it a "great opportunity" for the village and residents.
He added: "I think the premises is suitable and also it will be renovated and refitted to a high standard. It's going to be a community store, with all the services expected, including parcel services.
"We are aware of the residential setting but we've applied for these hours to make it really convenient for customers." He also said the incidents referenced "don't seem to be anything to do with the premises." He also reminded the committee there are no objections from the police.
If agreed, it would be called the Althorne Store and be open from 6am to 11pm everyday. The licensing application includes the sale of alcohol for consumption off the premises. The council's committee will announce its decision in the next week.
