The following tribute to Margaret Day, a highly respected member of the local community, has been made by The Maldon Society.
It was with great sadness last week to hear that Margaret Day, The Maldon Society's President, our past Chairman and long-term member of The Maldon Society died last week.
She will be greatly missed and will be remembered for her involvement with many local organisations and events.
Margaret and Brian moved to Maldon in 1983 and joined the Society in the same year. They were both active members and soon joined the committee, Brian as Treasurer and Margaret as Membership Secretary.
For many years the Society held annual themed banquets in the United Reformed Church Hall for 50 or more members. Margaret and Brian prepared the food for these in their own kitchen.
Margaret's favourite was the Tudor banquet with costumes, Tudor music and a specialist speaker, all for £6 for a three-course meal with wine! The last annual supper was held in 2007 to celebrate The
Maldon Society's 50th anniversary. Margaret attended the Society's 60th Anniversary in 2017. Margaret and Brian took part in many Maldon events – Victorian evenings dressed in Victorian costume and manning a stall to raise funds for The Maldon Society. They belonged to Maldon'sTwinning Association and were regular stewards at The Maldon Museum.
Margaret was the instigator behind the Blue Plaques scheme in Maldon. She was able to join in the celebrations in September 2018 when two new plaques relating to the Bright family were installed.
The Town Map in front of All Saints Church in Maldon's High Street was another one of her ideas so visitors could see all that Maldon has to offer the visitor.
Margaret was involved in the naming of our Pride of Maldon rose which has enjoyed a wonderful comeback year with the seven bushes flowering over a long period in their first year.
Margaret was also a Trustee of the Maeldune Heritage Centre and in 2007 became Chairman of the Trustees. She organised the 20th and 25th anniversaries of the making of the Millennium Embroidery
in September 2011 and September 2016. We would like to record our thanks to Margaret and Brian for their time and commitment to The Maldon Society, The Maeldune Centre and the time and effort given to Maldon's community. There is an oral history recording of Margaret's memories of life in Maldon on the listening station at The Maeldune Heritage Centre if you would like to listen to her memories. Margaret will be greatly missed as a friend and an active person in Maldon's community and our thoughts are with Brian and family members.
