D-Day Veteran Ron celebrates 100th Birthday
A local D-Day Veteran celebrated his 100th Birthday in style in a celebratory parade through the streets of Maldon.
The Royal British Legion, Maldon & Heybridge Branch, organised the Birthday parade for Royal Marine veteran Ron Baker, on Friday (August 16).
Veterans from the Maldon & Heybridge Armed Forces and Veterans Breakfast club, along with Sea and Marine Cadets, paraded from Toll House, Fullbridge down to Bath Place Wharf to pay tribute to a D-Day veteran of Sword Beach, Ron Baker RM.
Special visitor, Royal Marine Corps Regimental Sergeant Major Tim Jukes, accompanied Ron as he inspected the troops.
Major Tim Jukes presented Ron with Birthday cards and letters from the 1st Sea Lord, Admiral Sir Benjamin John Key, KCB, CBE, ADC, and Commandant General, General Gwyn Jenkins CB OBE ADC.
More than 150 cards were received from well-wishers and these were presented whilst the troops sang "Happy Birthday" to Ron.
Chairman of Maldon District Council, Cllr Kevin Lagan and Mayor of Maldon, Cllr Andrew Lay, also attended to take part in celebrations.
Ron was presented with a Certificate of Long Service to the Poppy Appeal by Malcolm Taylor, County Chairman, Royal British Legion.
The event ended with a Birthday Cake presentation by the youngest Sea Cadet on parade.
In true Maldonian style, Ron then left for a well-deserved birthday luncheon at nearby favourite restaurant, House of Delight in Maldon High Street.
