A charity set up in honour of popular Maldon cricketer David Randall is appealing for storage space so it can continue its work supporting people with terminal illnesses in the district.

The David Randall Foundation is a small Maldon-based charity run entirely by volunteers and funded by donations from residents.

At the moment, everything the charity needs is stored in David's mum Sue Randall's garage, but she said: "It has got to the stage now that alternative accommodation is needed for all the banners, gazebos, merchandise, Santa suits et cetera."

The foundation was set up nine years ago by family and friends of David, who was a member of Maldon Cricket Club from the age of six until his death from cancer in July 2012 at 27.

He competed for Essex in the under-10 to under-19 teams, becoming player of the year for five consecutive years, and was part of the England Under 15 squad.

He was also a keen fundraiser and took part in the Maldon Mud Race to raise money for Macmillan in 2011.

The foundation, which is entirely run by volunteers, helps people with terminal illnesses enjoy life to the full by providing financial and practical support to help facilitate days out - "good days".

The charity also offers scholarships and inspirational awards to those who are passionate about pursuing their ambitions in sport or music, but who may be held back by their financial situation.

Sue said: "As a charity, we aim to spend every penny that people donate to us on the good days for terminally-ill people, scholarships for aspiring musicians and sports people and the annual cabbie day."

The cabbie day organised by the foundation involves London taxi drivers donating a day's work to bring East London children with disabilities or from disadvantaged backgrounds to Maldon for a day of fun activities.

Sue continued: "We have investigated hiring a storage unit, but that would take an awful lot of the money people donate to us away from the people who need it.

"We wondered if there was someone in Maldon who had a garage they didn't use or some other space that we could rent at a nominal fee as the commercial rates are really beyond our means."
