Firefighters had to save drivers from flood water in two separate rescues yesterday (Monday, 28 December) - one in Maldon district and another at Sandon.

Now they have re-issued safety advice for motorists with more wet weather on the way.

Crews were called to Hoe Mill Road, Woodham Walter at 4.56pm where a person was trapped in their car after driving into floodwater.

On-call firefighters from Maldon had to use a triple extension ladder to rescue the driver, who was freed and brought to safety by 5.25pm.

This was followed not long after by the dramatic rescue of a driver in Sandon who ended up stuck in flood water up to his chest.

A crew from Chelmsford were called to Hammonds Road at 6.36pm to help the man. He had got out of his car after driving onto a flooded road and then became stuck.

Firefighters waded into the water to bring him to safety, managing to get him out of the flood by 7.47pm. An ambulance was called as he was showing signs of hyperthermia and police had to to set up a diversion to stop other drivers entering the road.

A spokesperson for Essex Fire and Rescue Service said: "With more rain expected this week, please follow our advice and stay safe while driving on wet roads. If you come across a flooded road, turn around and find another route.

"Do not attempt to drive through flood water - just a couple of feet of water is enough to float your vehicle. If you have to drive through water, reduce your speed and allow extra braking distance when driving in wet conditions.

"Driving into flood water just isn't worth it. You're risking your own life and you'll require the help of fire crews and rescue teams who could be needed elsewhere."
