Guide Dogs fundraiser at Maldon Constitutional Club raises over £1,000, joined by snooker World Championship runner-up Ali Carter
Maldon's Constitutional Club, in Fambridge Road, welcomed a whole host of pawed pals, along with local snooker legend Ali Carter, last Sunday (October 16).
More than £1,000 was raised for Guide Dogs UK, a charity which provides mobility support for the blind and partially sighted.
Alice Robinson, from the Constitutional Club, told Nub News: "We thought we would have a fundraiser for Guide Dogs UK as some of the members have been affected by sight loss.
"And as it's the Guide Dogs' 90th anniversary this month, we thought, 'what a great time to have it!'"
The team organised a whole weekend of fundraising, and asked members to bring raffle prizes. More than 50 prizes were donated in total.
Guests also bought raffle tickets from the bar.
The fundraiser kicked off with a quiz night on Saturday.
This was followed by the guide dogs and trainers coming in to see members on Sunday afternoon.
They (the trainers, that is) answered members' questions, before letting them give the dogs a bit of a fuss. Then, they drew the raffle.
Guests even had a lovely surprise when one of the members invited two-time snooker World Championship runner-up Ali Carter into the club. Keen members and snooker lovers took the professional on, at £20 a game, which helped to raise even more money for the charity.
Alice said she was 'thrilled' when at last count, the event raised £1,055. But that is expected to be event more once the total amount is counted.
