Heybridge Basin: questions have been asked over what checks should be in place following Brexit

Members of Heybridge Basin Parish Council have raised questions over border controls at marinas following Brexit.

A meeting of the council yesterday (Tuesday, 3 February) heard from some members how prior to the UK joining the European Union in 1972, those arriving and mooring at the marina had to register and have their boats checked under a system managed by HM Coastguard.

Councillor Keith Lawson said: "I don't think we're going to be going back to pre-EU days and having the coastguard come along and wave a yellow flag, but there must be some guidance of some sort."

Council chair, Councillor Michael Edwards, added: "It won't just be the Basin - there are marinas at other places in the district and nationally, too."

Cllr Edwards said he would write to Maldon District Council following the meeting to seek advice.
