IN PICTURES: Queen's Baton Relay visits Maldon's Promenade Park
Yesterday, the Queen's Baton arrived in Maldon, carried by 10 specially chosen 'Batonbearers' on a two-kilometre course around the park, stopping by the statue of Byrhtnoth, before concluding on the UFest stage.
The Baton contains a message from Her Majesty The Queen to the Commonwealth and has been carried around the world on a 294-day, 90,000-mile journey. Finally, it will reach its destination at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham on 28 July, where the message will be read out.
When the Baton came to Promenade Park in Maldon, it was greeted by Her Majesty's Lord Lieutenant of Essex, Mrs Jennifer Tolhurst; Chairman of Maldon District Council, Councillor Bob Boyce MBE; and Maldon Mayor, Councillor Andrew Lay.
To mark the arrival of the Queen's Baton Relay, UFest, a free community festival was held in the Park, featuring a variety of activities for visitors to enjoy.
Activities included yoga, kickboxing and Chinese exercise classes, along with mini games from Maldon Hockey.
There was also music throughout the day, with DJ Taiwo Ajayi entertaining between exercise classes. DixieLand, a four-piece jazz band, took to the stage from 5.30pm. The evening highlight, was the covers band Exposé, which organisers say 'brought to life' music from artists such as Abba, Queen, Chris Isaak, Gary Numan and Wheatus.
