The Thames Sailing Barge Trust held two educational activity days for local children aboard the historic sailing barge Centaur at Hythe Quay, Maldon, this month.

Staffed by volunteers from the Trust, the activity days took place on Thursday 11 and Thursday 18 August.

Children aged between 5 and 11 years were invited to take part in the activities on offer, aboard the barge which was built in 1895.

One of the activities on offer was painting pebbles, allowing the children to explore the maritime theme through art. (Photos: Karen Hughes)

John Rayment, Membership Secretary at the Trust, told Nub News: "The two Children's Days went very well, and we received some very positive feedback from those who attended."

Both children and parents who attended enjoyed the raising of the foresail on Centaur, and the children also enjoyed a variety of below-deck activities.

These included painting pebbles, making bookmarks and learning where the barges travelled and with what cargo when in trade. The children also learned the essential maritime skill of how to tie knots.

One parent said: "Thank you to all the volunteers for a fantastic time. All very friendly and knowledgeable - the take-home resources were fab."

The Trust received donations from the two events, totalling £289, which will go towards looking after its two barges, Pudge and Centaur.

Sailing Barge Pudge was used to evacuate British soldiers from Dunkirk during the Second World War. It celebrated its 100th birthday last month.

However, the Trust says the aim of the events were to make children aware of their local history and the place these 'iconic' sailing vessels play in the history of Maldon.

"A fantastically well-organised event, everything explained on arrival, brilliant activity books and all very hands-on."

Another parent described the activity day as "A fantastically well-organised event, everything explained on arrival, brilliant activity books and all very hands-on.

"My two boys loved it."

The Trust has no plans for further events this year as the current season is coming to an end.

However, there will be further events next year during the holidays, from Easter onwards. These will be advertised locally and on social media.

Earlier this month, Centaur took part in the Blackwater Sailing Barge Match and Smack Race, in the Slow Staysail Class.
