The Maeldune Heritage Centre has unveiled its free events in celebration of Heritage Weekend this year.

The centre is taking part in the fast-approaching annual event - England's largest heritage festival - over Saturday, 11 September and Sunday, 12 September.

Inside the centre, visitors will be able to browse video and oral listening archives from the Maldon Society and local history displays, which have been updated for the Edible England theme of the event this year.

There will also be talks on the 42-foot-long Maldon Embroidery, which consists of seven panels commemorating the 1000th anniversary of the Battle of Maldon in 991 AD, and an art exhibition to enjoy.

Outside, visitors will be able to watch an Anglo Saxon and Viking reenactment display, which will take place from 10am to 3pm and include training, games, arming the warrior and the main event - the battle.

A spokesperson for the centre said the weekend will be "a great opportunity to bring the family along and have some fun".

Also among the exciting plans is live music on the Saturday, when the Salt, Water and Beer Shanty Singers will perform at 3.45pm outside the centre.

Visitors will be able to take part in quizzes and wordsearches.

The craft shop, which sells works by local artists, will be open as usual and an exhibition by Thames Sailing Barge will be open to visitors.

The centre will be open from 10am to 4pm on both days, in addition to its normal opening hours - Tuesday to Saturday, 11am to 4pm.

It is located on the ground floor of St Peter's Tower on Market Hill.

Entry is free and donations are welcome.
