The historic St Mary's Church in Mundon hosted its inaugural Carols by Candlelight concert recently, transforming the redundant medieval church into a magical venue that echoed with festive melodies.

St Mary's Church, parts of which date back to the 12th century, has stood as a testament to history and heritage.

Acquired by the charity Friends of Friendless Churches in 1974, the church, although still consecrated, had fallen into disrepair.

Over the years, the Friends of Friendless Churches have worked tirelessly to preserve and conserve this architectural gem.

The church remains in the care of the charity and lies in the parish of Maldon St Mary with Mundon, whose clergy support the work of the Friends by nurturing the worship life of the medieval church and its community.

The challenge of organising an event in a venue without parking, heating, or electricity, situated in an extremely remote location, did not deter the dedicated organisers (volunteers from Mundon and St Marys Church Maldon) and, thanks to the generosity of sponsors and community support, St Mary's Church was brought to life on On Friday, 8 December 8 for a night of enchanting festivities.

Simon Cooke from LX Communications, Maldon, Matt and Keith from Matt's Generator Hire, Heybridge, Tony, John and Chris from Tony Turner Sheds, Mundon, tenant farmer James Milligan of Mundon Hall, the Rowsell Family, Mundon, Barbara Roe, Diane Leggett and Marge Orriss and Essex Dart Bus Service in Maldon were among the benevolent contributors whose donations made this event possible.

Their support enabled organisers to install festoon and safety lighting, stunning flower arrangements and, of course, a Christmas tree (or two) to create a warm, inviting and seasonal atmosphere within the ancient walls of the church.

The event featured the angelic voices of the St Mary's Maldon choir, filling the air with timeless carols, bible readings and prayers. The service, led by Fr Andrew Appiah the Parish Priest of St Mary's Mundon and St Mary's, Maldon (also Latchingdon and Mayland), brought the full congregation together in song, making it a truly special and memorable night for all who attended.

In the spirit of ongoing community engagement, St Mary's Church Mundon hosts an annual service led by St Mary's Maldon which, in 2024, will be held on Sunday the 8th September, the birthday of St Mary.

This service, a cherished tradition, serves as a testament to the enduring connection between the two churches and the shared commitment to preserving their rich history.

Despite the challenges posed by the church's remote location and lack of modern amenities, the community rallied together to create a safe and magical experience for attendees.

The Carols by Candlelight concert marked a significant moment in the ongoing efforts to preserve and revitalize St Mary's Church Mundon.

Organisers express their sincere gratitude to the sponsors, volunteers, and the community for making this inaugural event a success.

The Friends of Friendless Churches look forward to future events that celebrate the rich history and cultural significance of this cherished landmark.
