A car fire that caused a Maldon town centre road to fill with smoke this morning (Saturday, 12 December) was the result of an accident.

On-call Maldon firefighters rushed to the scene when the fire was reported in the vehicle behind Balti Bhujon restuarant in Mill Road at 10.46am.

An spokesperson for Essex Fire and Rescue Service said: "On-call firefighters from Maldon attended and extinguished the fire by 11.17am.

"The cause has been recorded as accidental."
