A care home is being extended with an extra 14 bedrooms to "improve the services and quality of accommodation for the vulnerable residents."

St Peter's Court, Spital Road, Maldon, has been given planning permission for the refurbishment and first floor extension to the nursing home including 14 new bedrooms, alterations to car park and associated landscape.

The agreed development at the care home is the latest attempt of the extension, in 2023 plans were agreed for an extra 12 rooms. The existing care home has 16 bedrooms, providing 24 bed spaces at ground floor level which would be reconfigured to provide an additional 14 bedrooms, in lieu of the previously proposed 12 additional bedrooms.

The council planning officer's report states: "No objections to the principle of the development are raised and it is considered that the revised proposal would not cause harm to heritage assets or the character or appearance of the area. It is not anticipated that the development would cause material harm to the amenity of the occupiers of neighbouring residential properties and would not be unacceptable in terms of parking provision. There are also no concerns regarding the adequate quality of life for the residents of the extended care home."

The plans state: "The proposal seeks a minor revision of the extant planning permission. The changes are the result of extensive coordinated design with the structural and services engineers and the Applicant's own internal consultation with the staff to improve the services and quality of accommodation for the vulnerable residents. The documentation illustrates the limited extent of the revision sought to the rear of the building only and now seeks approval for this improved scheme, helping to meet the growing demand for highly specialised care."
