Maldon District Council has announced plans to light the Beacon in Promenade Park, to mark The Queen's Platinum Jubilee next Thursday (June 2).

The beacon will be lit at 9.45pm and will be one of over 2,022 beacons lit by charities, communities, and faith groups all over the UK.

It forms part of the official programme announced by Buckingham Palace for the Jubilee Weekend.

The ceremony will begin by the Amphitheatre in Promenade Park at 9.10pm. There will be a reading of the Proclamation, followed by a lone Piper playing the Diu Regnare, a special piece written by Pipe Major Stuart Liddell, Glenfiddich Champion Piper.

Councillor Bob Boyce MBE, Chairman of Maldon District Council and Councillor Stephen Nunn, Vice-Chairman of Maldon District Council, will be unveiling a plaque at a tree planted as part of The Queen's Green Canopy.

Cllr Boyce said: "We are proud to be part of this momentous celebration.

"We are honoured to be part of this special event for Her Majesty the Queen's 70th year as our Monarch and Head of the Commonwealth on her Platinum Jubilee."

There are also lots of events taking place throughout Maldon District, which you can find more details about on the website.
