In the days leading up to and including the Christmas and New Year holidays, Maldon Nub News will bring you messages from some key local figures. Some of these will be from politicians and so the views expressed are entirely their own.

Some will be long and others brief, but the thing they will have in common is their message to the people of Maldon as this most difficult of years draws to a close.

The following is a seasonal message from Mayor of Maldon, Councillor Abdul Jhual Hafiz.

"It has become a much-used statement, but we are most certainly "living through unprecedented times".

"Who would have thought this time last year we would find ourselves in this position? As terrible at the Covid pandemic is, it has brought out the best in many people, including in our home town of Maldon.

"The volunteers, key workers and others have been tremendous and I am proud to be the Mayor of such a hardworking and caring community. I thank all of you from the bottom of my heart.

"We will overcome all of this and the town will recover.

"I know that this Christmas will feel very different for you and your families, but it is vitally important that we all follow the rules and stay safe. That way we can look forward to happier and healthier times.

"I do, however, wish you all a very Merry Christmas and I look forward to a return to normality in 2021."
