Leader of Maldon District Council, Independent Councillor Wendy Stamp, has issued a statement on the decision to increase the amount of council tax paid to the authority by £5 a year for a Band D property.

The decision was made at the council's budget meeting on Tuesday, 23 February. Cllr Stamp's statement follows here:

"We had to ensure that the budget is sustainable otherwise we will see pressure in future years.

"Since leading the independent group, I certainly hoped all political parties and groups would work together, to create a stronger and better future.

"Sadly, the Government hasn't covered the council's short fall, so the alternative budget proposal made by the Conservatives for a 0% increase on the District Council element of the council tax, would have had serious long term consequences for the district.

"I believe we have taken a pragmatic and prudent approach, looking at the bigger picture as we have already seen a number of pressures on our finances. Yes, we are putting up council tax, but by a very small amount, and it has to be done, we are all in this together, not just this year but for the future unknown challenges which lie ahead.

"We will continue to use our reserves wisely in order to serve the people of Maldon and continue to deliver the best possible services to our residents.

"We are increasing spending in areas such as the Citizens Advice Bureau who provide an invaluable service to the community and those who need support. We are not, however, increasing things like car park charges and barge fees. This should go some way to encourage people to shop here and to maintain the district's unique character."
