The leader of Maldon District Council has spoken of her understanding on why the district will move to Tier Two 'High' level restrictions – and of her hope that the area will soon be able to move into Tier One.

Councillor Wendy Stamp's statement comes days before the national lockdown ends at midnight on Wednesday, 2 December to move to the Tier Two restrictions locally.

Cllr Stamp said: "Whilst it is disappointing that we have been put back into the 'High' Tier, it is clear that cases are still of concern in a number of areas in Essex.

"The new High Tier rules are more stringent than last time, but I hope that everyone will continue to follow the rules and hopefully, we will see Essex move into the Medium Tier as soon as possible."

And speaking of the need to support local shops and outlets when they re-open on Thursday morning, she added: "It is of course good news that our High Street businesses can reopen in time for Christmas sales, and I hope that we can all do our upmost to shop locally and support our local businesses.

"However, it is extremely important that we all remember to wash our hands, wear a mask and keep our distance whilst we are out and about so we can all enjoy our shopping safely."
