A Burnham man has been banned from contacting 'any' females under 18, as Essex Police says he poses a risk to vulnerable people in the town.

Mahmun Miah, 33, was given a Sexual Harm Prevention Order (SHPO) on Thursday 19 October for a period of 10 years.

Detective Sergeant Ben Rushmere, from Essex Police's Child Sexual Exploitation Proactive Investigation Team, said: "This order means that he is unable to have any unsupervised contact with any female under 18 years, use the internet to contact any female under the age of 18 years old and prevents him from offering gifts, alcohol and/or cigarettes to any female under the age of 18 years old.

"This will ensure young girls are safe from his predatory behaviour."

Essex Police says its teams work continuously to prevent crime occurring.

Many of these teams adopt a 'proactive' approach and focus on issues within communities including identifying individuals who may pose a risk.

Det Sgt Rushmere continued: "The police do so much more than just turning up to crime scenes and investigating matters which have been reported to us.

"In this recent case, we understood that the community, specifically parents in the community were concerned about this man.

"In instances where we cannot pursue a criminal conviction, we think it's important to use all the tools at our disposal to keep people safe."
