Beacon Hill Rovers FC, based in Wickham Bishops, has completed a series of charity runs for Sarcoma UK, honouring their teammate who recently fought cancer.

Student Johnny Hughes was diagnosed with Osteosarcoma, a subtype of sarcoma which occurs in the bone, last November aged 18. That was just a few months after his 1st Team debut at Beacon Hill FC.

He underwent chemotherapy in London, along with major surgery, and is now in remission. During that time, Johnny was supported by Sarcoma UK, which funds vital research and offers support for anyone affected by sarcoma cancer.

As their nominated charity, the team has worked hard to raise funds for Sarcoma UK. So far, they have raised £1,262.

A spokesperson for Beacon Hill FC told Nub News: "The whole club has taken part in our 'Jog for Johnny' campaign, completing various runs across all 18 teams to raise money for this fantastic charity.

"We will also be holding various fundraising events throughout the season."

In a statement on the club's website, Johnny said he was looking forward to rebuilding his life following his "gruelling" treatment. He aims to get back to university and, one day, return to the football pitch.

"I would love to help raise awareness of Osteosarcoma - it is very important to know the symptoms," he said.

"Mine was as simple as waking up with a sore arm that progressed to pain when raising it. I saw local doctors and physios before a diagnosis was confirmed on November 5.

"Please don't ignore any pains your kids may have, no matter how trivial. Insist on a blood test to test for Osteosarcoma.

"You never think these things will happen to you."

In February, Johnny's Tesco colleagues held a charity bake sale to raise funds and awareness for Sarcoma UK.

Donations to the ongoing fundraiser can be made via Beacon Hill FC's JustGiving Page.
