Maldon Film Club to show Oscar-winning blockbuster 'Belfast' plus two other first-rate flicks in March
Maldon Film Club is continuing its 18th season next month, with two Oscar-winning blockbusters and one Oscar-nominated flick for members to enjoy in March.
The Film Club meets fortnightly on Wednesdays at Maldon Town Hall. Doors open at 7.30pm before the films start at 8pm. The current season continues until May 24 and films will be shown fortnightly on Wednesdays.
First of three films for March is the Oscar-winning Promising Young Woman, which will be screened on Wednesday 1.
Pushing thirty, and defined by a hideous crime involving her emotionally-scarred bosom friend, Cassie knows first-hand that some wounds never heal. Leading an uneventful existence, she has found the perfect way to deal with the painful past. Dressed to kill, at night, Cassie frequents the local bars and nightclubs, pretending to be dead-drunk, utterly helpless and vulnerable. Every week, "lethally beautiful" Cassie is on the prowl for all sorts of nocturnal predators, who are unaware that the hunter can sometimes become the prey. Then, Ryan, a kindly and caring old classmate, enters the picture - and just like that, Cassie wants out. However, everybody knows that breaking bad habits is easier said than done.
Later in March, the Club will screen the Oscar nominated Parallel Mothers, directed by Pedro Almodovar, on Wednesday 15. The film tells of two women, Janis and Ana, who first meet in a hospital room where they are going to give birth. Both are single and became pregnant by accident. Janis, middle-aged, doesn't regret it and is exultant. The other, Ana, an adolescent, is scared, repentant and traumatised. Janis tries to encourage her while they move like sleepwalkers along the hospital corridors. The few words they exchange in these hours will create a very close link between the two, which by chance develops and complicates, and changes their lives in a decisive way.
Finally for this month, on Wednesday 29 March, the Club is delighted to be screening the Oscar-winning film Belfast, directed by Kenneth Branagh. Set in August 1969 and surrounded by sporadic violence and growing danger, nine-year-old Buddy finds himself confronted with the ugly reality of sectarian conflict. As the suffocating stranglehold of increasing turmoil tightens around his once-peaceful working-class neighbourhood, Buddy tries his best to understand The Troubles. Now, Buddy's family must come face to face with a nearly impossible, life-altering decision: stay or start packing?
The membership fee from now to May is just £20, so join enjoy the remaining seven films for free!
