Maldon & Tiptree FC faced their fourth defeat this season, as neighbours Heybridge Swifts made the short trip to Maldon and left victorious.

More than six hundred fans turned out to watch the August Bank Holiday derby this afternoon (August 29).

But today's game took a while to get going, with few chances for either side early on.

Andrew Fennell had a run through the Maldon penalty box, as did Harvey Sayer into the Swifts' box. Both had shots that didn't trouble the keepers.

In the 31st minute, Rob Harvey's shot hit the left-hand post of the Maldon goal and he netted the rebound from an acute angle to put Heybridge ahead. This was his first goal since joining the Swifts.

Following that, both teams continued to struggle to create much action in front of the goal, with both sides managing mere half-chances.

Half time: Maldon 0 - Heybridge 1

Heybridge started the second half with better chances, although Ross Wall's low shot was fought off with a good save by Tom Middlehurst in the Maldon goal.

Kamani McFarlane came off the Maldon bench to replace Dylan Logan for the second half. Alex Stephenson came off the Heybridge bench to replace Darren Phillips.

Heybridge's appeals for a penalty after an apparent hand ball were waved away. Meanwhile, Tom Middlehurst made a very fine save against a low-down shot from Jack Adlington.

The game headed into injury time as Rob Harvey crossed over for Fennell to tap in at the far post.

That second goal for Heybridge secured their win, despite Maldon pulling one back with just about the last kick of the game.

A corner put the ball right under the crossbar before Sam Carter knocked the ball into his own net. That own-goal from the Swifts midfielder gave the Jammers their only goal of the match.

Final score: Maldon 1 - Heybridge 2

Heybridge Swifts are set to take on Hitchin Town as part of the FA Cup, this Saturday (September 3). On the same day, Maldon & Tiptree FC will take on Haringey Borough.

The Jammers will be looking for a much-needed win as, so far, their only success was against Harpenden Town on August 20.
