Maldon minister speaks up as community rallies to show inclusion and respect

By Nub News Reporter 22nd Sep 2025

INDIVIDUALS and families in Burnham-on-Crouch festooned the bridge at the approach to the town with ribbons on Sunday, 21 September, to show that Burnham reflects the British values of inclusion and respect.

Residents who took part say they are increasingly concerned about the rapid rise of hostility, divisive language and worrying levels of vitriol on local forums and social media that has followed the campaign known as 'Operation Raise the Colours'.

The community action aims to show that people can feel safe and welcomed in Burnham and it mirrors other ribbon tying initiatives around the country that are being carried out as a symbol of unity.

Some residents had previously signed an open letter to Burnham Town Council asking it to distance itself from 'Operation Raise the Colours' specifically and were deeply disappointed when the Council declined to take that step.

Some taking part on Sunday said that it is especially troubling that a Reform UK Burnham Town councillor is actively supporting the campaign 'Operation Raise the Colours' online.

The Reverend Anne Sardeson, United Reformed Church minister in Burnham, Southminster, Maldon and Danbury, speaking on her own behalf said "I am increasingly concerned by the anti-immigration rhetoric being expressed by those who are the driving force behind the "raise the colours" campaign and I have heard too many people say that they feel unsafe in their communities now because of the anger and hatred that is being expressed by some people. This includes Burnham.

"Flying national flags is a wonderful way to celebrate in times of joy and express connection in times of sorrow, however, the energy behind this current flag flying campaign seems to be one of sending a message that seeks to exclude those who are not seen as belonging under the flags that are currently being flown.

"I do not wish to see Burnham associated with such views and would rather we came together to show we are still the diverse and welcoming community I first encountered when I moved here just over five years ago."

Those who took part on Sunday say that they hope others will follow and place their own ribbons too.
