Sir John Whittingdale joined officials for a 'steel-signing ceremony' to mark the construction of a new primary school in Limebrook Way, Maldon, last Friday (September 15).

The Maldon MP met with Essex County Councillors, Lion Academy Trust Head Justin James, and representatives of construction firm Morgan Sindall Ltd, on the site of the new Limebrook Primary School.

Sir John said: "I am delighted to see that this much-needed new primary school is being provided so quickly."

Located in the Handley Garden development, the two-form primary school will accommodate 420 children. A nursery will provide 56 places for 0-4 year olds. Work began over summer and both facilities are due to open in September 2024.

"Maldon is growing fast, and this will help relieve pressure on our existing schools while increasing parental choice," Sir John added.

"I know a number of parents have already applied for places for their children and have no doubt it will prove extremely popular."

Operated by Lion Academy Trust, it is designed to be Net Zero in operation through the provision of PV Panels and air source heat pumps.

Following approval from Essex County Council last May, the facilities are being created as part of the South Maldon Garden Suburb development. Up to 1,000 homes are set to be built, along with retail space, green spaces, allotments, and playing fields.
