A MALDON teenager has been given a three-year driving ban after overtaking cars at 60mph in a police chase through Basildon and Wickford.

The 17-year-old boy, who comes from Maldon district but cannot be named for legal reasons, was sentenced at Colchester Magistrates' Court yesterday (Monday 21 September) for dangerous driving, driving without insurance, driving while disqualified and failing to stop when directed.

He admitted the offences and was ordered to complete a 60-day youth rehabilitation order and to pay £400 compensation, £85 court costs and a £21 victim surcharge.

On 19 March police stopped a car in Basildon and spoke to the driver.

He provided them with someone else's driving licence before driving off with police cars in pursuit.

The youngster then performed several dangerous manoeuvres including overtaking cars at 60mph in a 30mph zone before his car was blocked in at Borwick Lane, Wickford.

He attempted to run off but was caught by police in a nearby field and arrested.
