Maldon's famous Thames sailing barges made headline news recently as part of the Little Ships fleet commemorating their role in the wartime Dunkirk rescue mission.

Now the Thames Sailing Barge Trust, a Maldon-based charity, is offering last-minute opportunities for the public to experience life aboard its famous vessels.

Tower Bridge in London is just one of the destinations offered aboard Dunkirk veteran Pudge later in July.

Pudge heads for the London landmark at the start of a four-day voyage on the evening of Sunday, July 27 from Queenborough on the Isle of Sheppey. But before that, two-night sea cruises aboard Pudge or her sister barge Centaur will set sail from Maldon on July 11 and 25.

For those who enjoy a bit of competitive fun at sea, Pudge will be competing in the Swale Barge Match, one of many such events happening in south-east England throughout the summer. This three-night voyage, including the Swale race, leaves Queenborough on the evening of Thursday, July 31.

All the barge trust's voyages are fully catered, but participants might be invited to lend a hand at the wheel or hoisting the famous red sails.

Get all the information about booking and fares, what to bring and where to board, from Carey Brown on [email protected]. As always, profits from passenger voyages go to the Thames Sailing Barge Trust to help preserve the historic vessels.
