Maldon MP John Whittingdale has spoken of his pride and recollections of meeting the late Queen Elizabeth, whose death was announced today (Thursday, 8 September).

Mr Whittingdale said: "I join, not just my constituents and our nation, but the rest of the world in paying my most sincere thanks for the long life she lived, and the loyal commitment she gave to us during her 70 years of public service to our nation and our Commonwealth.

"Throughout her reign she conducted herself with selflessness and dedication and stood as a steadfast and dependable figurehead in a changing world, and throughout times of great hardship.

"I was exceptionally privileged to meet her Majesty, the Queen, many times, both as a Privy Councillor and as Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport, a role which called on me to to accompany her Majesty to the Cenotaph on Remembrance Sunday.

"However, my fondest memory is of her visit to Maldon in 2010.

"This was not her first visit to the town - indeed she first came to Maldon in 1971 - but her return brought a carnival atmosphere to our High Street where cheering crowds thronged to meet their dear Queen.

"Her Majesty shaped the lives of generations and she will be missed by so many people across the world. Hers was a life to be celebrated in history.

"Grief for her passing can be lessoned by the knowledge that hers was a life well lived, as she chose faith, humility, honour and duty.

"On behalf of all my constituents in Maldon, I send deep condolanaces to all the members of the Royal family."

Maldon Town Council has invited residents to sign the Book of Condolence at the Town Hall between 9am until 4pm, Monday to Friday.
