New estate planned for Mayland

By Matthew Critchell LDRS 6th Aug 2025

FRESH plans have been revealed for a new housing estate at a former plant nursery site in the area.

Savannah Properties has submitted its plans for the 55 new homes off Steeple Road and Mill Road in Mayland.

The current site was a former plant growers' nursery. The plans state that there are only a few sheds at the site currently.

It is the latest plans for the site after previous proposals for 57 homes were withdrawn and then a plan for 57 homes was refused by Maldon District Council. The latest proposals include 25 affordable homes, which is 45 per cent of the proposed new properties.

A range of home sizes, including one, two, three and four bedroom homes, and types with bungalows, apartments, maisonettes and houses, are also proposed. The plans state: "This site presents an opportunity to create an attractive, landscape-led new development.

The proposal site is located to the north of Mayland and aims to deliver much needed homes and offer an attractive new addition to this village.

"Upon completion of the site analysis, it became clear that the site will benefit from the proposed development in the following ways: breathe new life into an otherwise neglected site, provide new housing in a sought after area of Maldon, provide better pedestrian links surrounding the site, establish a clear architectural vernacular, reuse existing brownfield land and removal of potentially dangerous, dilapidated structures the site.

"The approval of this application will assist in addressing the persistent problem of inadequate housing supply across the country and will meet the very basic human need of real people in real need of market and affordable housing.

"The development proposal clearly constitutes sustainable development and, although that there are limited harms associated with the proposals the identified harms cannot be said to significantly and demonstrably outweigh the benefits of the proposed development."
