Fantastic news for pet lovers in the Maldon district as the council adopts new rating system for animal services.

In 2018 the Government introduced licensing regulations, and a star rating scheme for animal establishments. These regulations apply to dog breeders, kennels, catteries, doggy daycare, home boarding for dogs, horse riding establishments, businesses selling animals and those using animals for exhibition.

The new Paws on the Doors scheme replicates 'Scores on the Doors', also known as the National Food Hygiene Rating Scheme, and aims to help pet owners to make informed decisions when selecting the best for their animal.

Councillor Kevin Lagan, Chairman of Maldon District Council, said, "I have no doubt that Paws on the Doors will not only improve animal welfare by improving consumer choice but will also promote local businesses who work hard to keep their welfare standards high".

"I'm also delighted that we are one of the first Councils to come on board with the scheme. Maldon is only the second Council in Essex to adopt Paws on the Doors and I hope that it will make a real difference for our furry friends."

Rather than rely on word of mouth, the Paws on the Doors website will enable consumers to search across council boundaries, check that operators are legitimately licensed and find out what star rating they have.

Paul Hiscoe, Managing Director of Animal Insight said, "We are confident that Paws on the Doors will have a massive impact on animal welfare, as the scheme will encourage businesses to achieve the top ratings so as to attract pet owners across the country, exactly as Scores on the Doors dramatically improved compliance to Food Hygiene regulations when it was launched".

Many more councils will be adding their data to the site over the next few weeks and months as the scheme rolls out across England.
