A proposal to build two new homes on Stoney Hills in Burnham-on-Crouch has been revealed, despite controversy over previous development in the area.

The plans, submitted to Maldon District Council, involve demolishing the existing home on the plot and replacing it with two three-bedroom chalets.

Previous bids to build new homes on Stoney Hills have been met with fierce local opposition in the past, including an application to build eight new bungalows - approved in September - which received 41 letters of objection from residents.

Many of the letters cited concerns about overdevelopment, pollution and safety, as residents said it had become "dangerous" in the area due to its volume of traffic.

A statement submitted with the latest application to build two new homes on the land says: "Historically, there has been much local opposition to past residential development at Stoney Hills on the grounds of the suitability and impact on the access road.

"In every case the highways authority, the local planning authority and planning inspectors have ruled that the road at Stoney Hills is suitable to serve the further considerable expansion of residential development at Stoney Hills.

"The Stoney Hills approach Road has recently undergone an upgrade from a previously unmade road to a full metalled road with passing places along its length."

It adds: "This application proposes the addition of one residential dwelling with a maximum additional vehicle usage of two motor cars.

"As such the additional burden on the road at Stoney Hills is highly unlikely to cause any significant additional impacts on highway safety."

Maldon District Council will make the final decision.
